Frigidaire FAD704TDP

Written on January 15, 2012 at 4:56 am, by

Frigidaire FAD704TDPWell deserving of its position amongst the best dehumidifiers for portable home use, the Frigidaire FAD704TDP is a high capacity, high efficiency, easy to use solution for excessive moisture in the air. Using just 765 W of power, the Frigidaire FAD704TDP is Energy Star compliant, which means that it will not eat away at your electricity bills unlike some 70 pint dehumidifiers. Although the Frigidaire FAD704TDP has since been succeeded by the newer Frigidaire FAD704DUD, the Frigidaire FAD704TDP still remains very worthy of a mention as one of the best dehumidifier for home use, mainly due to its receiving a colossal 411 reviews at an extremely impressive 4.4/5 average (nearly 90 per cent).

The Frigidaire FAD704TDP has:

Maximum 70 pints / day moisture removal ability
Full digital controls
Constant operation ability using hose and appropriate drain
Revolutionary purification using anti-microbial filter
Removable bucket and light to indicate full capacity
1 year full warranty

Customer rating: 4.4/5.0 stars (over a total of 411 reviews)

Although as I have written above, the Frigidaire FAD704TDP does have a newer model out in 2011 called the FAD704DUD, being newer doesn’t necessarily mean being better quality. Indeed, simply by comparing the Frigidaire FAD704TDP Dehumidifier reviews with those of its newer model, we can see that the FAD704TDP has managed to maintain a top-class 88% average over a very large (even by Amazon’s standards) 411 reviews. Now, since the FAD704DUD is newer, we have to give it time to accumulate dehumidifier reviews but thus far, has 218 reviews and seems to be resting at around 80%. Any number of dehumidifier reviews over 100 I would say is a pretty reliable indicator and the average isn’t likely to change. Therefore, we need to investigate some of the reasons why the FAD704TDP seems to have the edge over its newer sibling.

There are a few minor problems that customers are mentioning with the Frigidaire FAD704TDP, but with an average 4.4 out of 5 stars, it’s going to be difficult to find any substantial amount of dissatisfaction with this unit, with this average rating making it the best dehumidifier in terms of average customer opinion. The typical review might mention any of the following: Quick setup time; almost silent operation (particularly excellent considering it’s a 70 pint unit); overnight complete removal of moisture from the air; decent air cleansing as an added bonus – all followed by a general recommendation. It’s impossible to relay every single point since 411 reviews would take about a year to do so, but I’ve summarized them pretty well. So, all in all, the Frigidaire FAD704TDP is, as one customer puts it quite well, “confidently recommended”.

Given the fact that the newer model also received very good ratings, I honestly believe the difference is marginal. I have tested both units and it seems that they both operate in a similar manner, and are both very effective. Perhaps, due to it being newer, the newer model may have the slight edge in the energy efficiency department however there is still an 8% difference in favor of the Frigidaire FAD704TDP if you look at their average customer rating. My own educated guess would be due to the longevity of the Frigidaire FAD704TDP. Many people review products on Amazon after years of owning them, and the fact that the FAD704TDP (older model) has a higher overall rating than its newer sibling suggests that in the long term, the Frigidaire FAD704TDP is receiving a few less complaints.

As always, use my dehumidifier reviews as a guideline – a brief overview, if you will – but always read at least some of the original FAD704TDP dehumidifier reviews to which I refer throughout this article. Frigidaire FAD504TDD 50 Pint Dehumidifier

Frigidaire FAD504TDD 50 Pint DehumidifierThe Frigidaire FAD504TDD 50 Pint Dehumidifier firmly deserves its place as our selected best dehumidifier in the 50 pint per day class, boasting the highest average customer rating in the entire home dehumidifiers category. With the Frigidaire FAD504TDD, you can effortlessly decide how much moisture you want in the air with the simple push button electronic interface, and not only does this frigidaire 50 pint dehumidifier remove moisture, it also cleans the air as it processes it with its unique anti-microbial filter which rids the air of potentially dangerous bacteria and allergens which can often cause illness. Customer rating: 4.4/5 stars (from total 299 customer ratings)

As mentioned in the introductory product summary (first paragraph), the Frigidaire FAD504TDD has really pleased a large crowd of reviewers in a notoriously difficult product category. Even for the best companies (e.g. Frigidaire, Soleus Air, Danby et al.) making a dehumidifier that will last years is an extremely tricky task; there are simply so many things that can go wrong, many of which are really out of the manufacturer’s control. It’s really impressive, therefore, that this Frigidaire 50 pint dehumidifier, the FAD504TDD, has managed to average a score of almost 90 per cent (4.4/5 stars) on Amazon. The fact that Frigidaire is willing to back the FAD504TDD with a full 1 year warranty is also indication that the manufacturer is aware of the capability of this medium sized yet surprisingly powerful unit.

Before getting started on any specifics contained within the specific Frigidaire FAD504TDD Dehumidifier reviews, I must mention that the Frigidaire FAD504TDD does in fact have the capability of continuous function using a hose leading to a suitable drain (at level height or below), although there is no mention of this in the Amazon product description. It’s really annoying to empty a 17 pint bucket two to three times a day when running continuously, so in my testing I only did that for a day and then switched to the hose. It’s so much easier.

It’s very difficult to relate what customers are praising about the Frigidaire FAD504TDD without sounding like some sort of sales letter. Anything you can imagine has been praised over 199 5/5 star Frigidaire FAD504TDD Dehumidifier reviews, and 66 4/5 star Frigidaire FAD504TDD Dehumidifier reviews, from the ease of setup to the energy efficiency, all the way to the ‘end product’, i.e. an extremely dry room! Customers are reporting that it can dehumidify spaces of up to 2000 square feet, though the exact number is (quite irritatingly) not specified by the manufacturer, as far as I am aware. (If anyone knows whether Frigidaire do publish their units’ area capabilities, please do contact me via the contact page.)

I find it far easier to nitpick and despite the brilliant review statistics for the Frigidaire FAD504TDD there are still a few issues raised by some less satisfied authors of a few Frigidaire FAD504TDD Dehumidifier reviews. (There are always going to be some.) One is that the bucket is difficult to handle – try and get the hose set up so that you don’t have to deal with the hassle. Trust me, it’s irritating to say the least to have to empty the bucket over and over again. Even if you have the hose, which is the next issue raised by customers, you should not run this continuously. Some portable dehumidifiers can be left on 24/7, but you will find that no matter the quality, if you use it like that without giving it a rest, they won’t last longer than 1-2 years. Be responsible with your use and when dehumidifying, close all doors and windows to the room, and you will get excellent results.

I highly suggest you read all the original 299 Frigidaire FAD504TDD Dehumidifier reviews on Amazon here. You can also see the newer model, the Frigidaire FAD504DUD, although this curiously has slightly less (though still very good) reviews.

Small Dehumidifier 70 Pint Soleus Air DP1-70-03

Written on January 2, 2012 at 4:02 am, by

Small Dehumidifier 70 Pint Soleus Air DP1-70-03The Soleus Air DP1-70-03 70 Pint Dehumidifier is a small dehumidifier that packs one heck of a punch. Operating at 850W, this small dehumidifier uses a fair amount of energy but can provide results to rival the very best dehumidifiers for the home. Don’t let its size deceive you – the Soleus Air DP1-70-03 is ideal for the more demanding moisture removal jobs, such as damp wood, mould, bacteria and all the nasty consequences of having too much moisture in the air. Being a 70 pint dehumidifier, the Soleus Air DP1-70-03 can’t be expected to be the smallest dehumidifier on the market, weighing in at nearly 50 lbs, but pound for pound, it represents excellent value, provided you know where to put it and can transport it to where you want it without damage.

The Soleus Air DP1-70-03 Small Dehumidifier 70 Pint has:

70 pint per day moisture removal capacity
continuous or timer mode, fully programmable on humidistat
3x fan speed settings
wheels to enable damage-free moving around the house
1 year warranty

The Soleus Air DP1-70-03 70 Pint Dehumidifier is currently unavailable. It may be out of production. The manufacturer (Soleus Air) may or may not be releasing an updated model, however if this does happen we will review the new model as soon as possible.

In the meantime, there are also 70 pint dehumidifiers with superior reviews. For the best 70 pint dehumidifier currently available, please see dehumidifier reviews for the Frigidaire FAD704DUD on Amazon.

Customer rating 3.9/5 stars (total 120 reviews)

For a small dehumidifier the Soleus Air DP1-70-03 definitely has quite a lot of power as many customers have rightly observed that it can comfortably dehumidify rooms of up to 1500-2000 square feet. Most people would buy a 70 pint dehumidifier for rather demanding jobs, whether it be that old basement that would never quite get dry or your particularly large hallway in a Florida summer – the Soleus Air DP1-70-03 is definitely up to the challenge. I see it as quite a pity that it appears to have been discontinued (though no official word on that – it’s just not available from many of the major retailers). Thankfully, the vast majority of customers are not reporting any breakdowns, and the shipping quality has been praised, an often overlooked factor as to whether or not you will have problems on arrival – a careless drop from the shipping company and appliances such as a small dehumidifier can be ruined. So, although you can’t buy this from amazon anymore, at least Soleus Air items are actually being treated with a lot more care now, it seems.

Unfortunately due to the unavailability of this particular model, I was unable to test this dehumidifier out for myself. Therefore anything I write is based on what reviewers on amazon and consumer reports, as well as various internet forums, are saying, and not from my own personal experience.

From some of the DP1-70-03 Dehumidifier reviews I am seeing online, please note some very critical points that some astute customers have noticed: Although the Soleus Air DP1-70-03 may be a 70 pint dehumidifier in the strictest sense, that only applies under ideal conditions, which is around 68 degrees Fahrenheit. I would imagine, any higher and the air is too hot, any lower and the difference between hot and cold isn’t enough, so a happy medium is where maximum yield is achieved. In addition, the bucket size, as with pretty much all small dehumidifiers, I am beginning to notice, is far too small relative to its daily capacity. 70 pints is over 8 gallons, but the bucket is less than a third of that volume. This means that unless you like to haul buckets in and out, you are going to have to use the constant function and attach a hose leading to a drain. Finally, there is no indication as to how large an area this small dehumidifier can cover. If it is a 70 pint dehumidifier I am guessing around 1500-2000 maximum, as seems to be confirmed by reviewers, but it would be nice for the manufacturer to give us exact details as per their trials, as they surely would know more about the product than we do. Finally, due to the fact that this product has been discontinued, I cannot confirm either way whether this is the best dehumidifier in its class or not, or even what calibre the DP1-70-03 is, without testing it first myself.

The Soleus Air DP1-70-03 Small Dehumidifier 70 Pint may have been discontinued, though it is not currently possible for us to confirm either way. It is not available from major online retailers such as Amazon. However, there are better alternatives available for a 70 pint dehumidifier which may be considered. Customer rating: 4/5 stars (36 total ratings)

Although as a 30 pint dehumidifier, it has a per day volume on the lower end of those dehumidifiers reviewed on this website, I have included the Soleus Air DP1-30-03 because it is nonetheless a top quality dehumidifier which is most suited to people who value mobility above all else. This truly is the best dehumidifier I’ve seen with respect to portability, with handles and wheels to ensure smooth transition from place to place, so while others are struggling with moving their dehumidifiers about the house – and possibly damaging the unit in the process – owners of the DP1-30-03 Portable Dehumidifier will have few problems with quick and easy relocation. Also, unlike many dehumidifiers, the DP1-30-03 30 Pint Dehumidifier is actually Energy Star compliant, which is not just a fancy gimmick – compliance with these strict energy efficiency regulations as set out on the federal level means that the impact of this portable dehumidifier on your energy bill will be barely noticeable.

While there has been a lot of popularity in favor of Soleus Air’s 40 pint per day cousin of the DP1-30-03, that unit was not without its controversy, for although there were hundreds of excellent dehumidifier reviews for that unit, around 30 percent of that amount had bad things to say about it. And so, we are left wondering: is the DP1-30-03 Portable Dehumidifier similar to its cousin in that respect, or will it be more reliable and live up to the revered Soleus Air name?

Fortunately, it seems that the DP1-30-03 30 Pint Dehumidifier is a lot more reliable and long lasting than its (now apparently distant) cousin. It’s definitely the best dehumidifier with a maximum moisture removal of 30 pints per day. I can only speculate that the increased reliability might be because of its additional portability and hence, decreased likelihood of in transit damage, or perhaps even the shipping method, in terms of both the carrier and the packaging, since this unit is shipped from a different vendor than the DP1-30-03′s cousin. At the end of the day, no one knows; all that matters is that customers are pleased with the relatively long lasting quality of this portable dehumidifier, possibly the most important aspect of all in your decision. From both my own tests and the reviews available on amazon and consumer reports, I can attest to the power of this unit, which would comfortably suck the air dry in a space up to around 750 square feet. The fact that if the power cuts out, the settings do not stay as previously programmed, is because it doesn’t allow itself to turn back on in the event of power outage. This is actually an advantage since many dehumidifiers are being broken by the surge of current after a power outage, so we must see this as a plus although one or two customers are complaining about it. I would prefer a working unit over a frazzled one any day! I know most people wouldn’t mind reprogramming it every once in a while; the interface is so simple that it’s no bother.

Now, it’s not all positive. While Soleus Air is claiming that this is a 30 pint dehumidifier, why is the tank so small? My opinion is that it does remove 30 pints per day, but they just haven’t made the bucket big enough, so you have to keep changing it quite often. Really, the only option for me was to put my hose in and let it drain out so that I could have it on constantly. Otherwise I would have been carrying buckets and buckets all week – who knew that so much water could be in the air, eh? This may be the most significant portable dehumidifier out there that can actually work, but with power comes a certain amount of weight, nonetheless. It’s portable, true, but I would be lying if I called it light. At around 30 pounds, it’s like a medium sized suitcase. An average guy can carry it, but it’s not a walk in the park. Finally, this portable dehumidifier may be more reliable than its 40 pint cousin, with a pretty darn good 4.0/5 star average rating, but it is not without its breakdowns. One or two after 2 years, one or two after 1 year – you get the picture. It’s not all rosy, but certainly better than average when you take a look at the ‘dropout’ rate of dehumidifiers as a whole. Last but not least, one vital bit of information you need to know – I ran this for about a week 24/7, and my electricity bill went up just shy of $1 over the average for the month. I monitor my bills well so I’m pretty accurate. So $1 x 4 for the month (rather than the week I ran it for) and you will get around 4 bucks per month as a cost to run this 24/7, variations depending on your energy supplier. It’s not cheap, but not too expensive either.

Soleus Dehumidifier Review

Written on December 17, 2011 at 3:18 am, by

Soleus DehumidifierSoleus Air is another one of the heavyweights in home dehumidifiers and one of the best dehumidifier specialists currently in business. This latest Soleus Dehumidifier, the CFM-40, is a 40 pint dehumidifier with a variety of features including non-CFC refrigerant, easy mobility with bottom wheels, and humidistat for precise pre-setting of the desired humidity level. The Soleus Dehumidifier CFM-40 is able to operate at extremely low temperatures all the way down to 41 degrees Fahrenheit, and switches itself off when the water level reaches capacity in order to prevent spillage.

The Soleus Dehumidifier CFM-40 40 Pint has:

40 pints per day dehumidifying capacity
Operation capability down to as low as 41 degrees Fahrenheit
Easy cleaning with removable air filter
Bottom wheels for stress free movement around the house
31 lbs unit weight

Customer rating: 3.6/5 stars (696 total ratings)

The first thing that strikes me about this Soleus Dehumidifier is that it has an astounding 696 reviews to its name on amazon, a total far beyond any 40 pint dehumidifier that I have thus far encountered. The average review is slightly below what we have seen for our previously featured dehumidifier reviews, with an average of 3.6/5, but to average that over nearly 700 reviews is respectable to say the least. There are nearly 500 customers who give this Soleus Air Dehumidifier either a 4 or 5 star rating, with a stellar 343 ratings at 5/5, however we cannot ignore the fact that 145 customers have also given it a 1 star rating. We will investigate the reasons for both the positives and negatives below.

First of all, we will cover the main advantages of buying a Soleus Dehumidifier CFM-40 over another competing model. This unit is one of the most popular dehumidifiers there is, and the huge number of Soleus CFM-40 Dehumidifier reviews on amazon are there for a reason. Hundreds of customers are reporting that the Soleus Air Dehumidifier CFM-40 has worked for over 6 months and even over 1 year without any problems whatsoever. Another positive is that it turns off when the power cuts out, and does not turn back on automatically, which protects it against damage from power outages as one of the big reasons for perfectly good dehumidifiers breaking is the great surge in current that occurs just after a power outage, against which many dehumidifiers do not have any protection. I’m glad Soleus Air have thought about this when they were making this CFM-40 40 Pint Dehumidifier. It definitely does seem as if, when a customer receives a good Soleus Air Dehumidifier unit, then it will be good forever.

Other features which may set this Soleus Dehumidifier apart from competitors is its triple-speed fan setting; now, some 40 pint dehumidifiers do have double fan speeds, though not all, but this Soleus Air Dehumidifier has a low, medium and high setting which is perfect for fine tuning the often considerable temperature increase that dehumidifiers do induce over long time periods of constant operation. The average 40 pint dehumidifier can increase room temperature anywhere between 3 and 7 degrees centigrade, and the fan is there to counteract this sometimes uncomfortable side-effect. As always, however, a more powerful fan means greater noise, so you have to balance your tolerance for noise with tolerance for temperature, to find a happy medium. More fan settings just help this decision quite a lot. While the three fan speed alone may not make the Soleus CFM-40 the best dehumidifier around, even in the more narrow 40 pint category, it is a feature which many of the leaders don’t have.

The programmable humidistat, timer and digital controls allow maximum flexibility and customization, beating the relatively rigid must-program-every-day DeLonghi dehumidifiers (unless on constant, in which case neither really needs that much programming except desired humidity level), and like any decent 40 pint dehumidifier (or any dehumidifier, for that matter) should, you can set this Soleus Dehumidifier to run 24/7 providing constant moisture removal, provided you hook it up to a hose around 1.5 cm in diameter and lead the hose to a drain. Don’t forget that the Soleus Air Dehumidifier CFM-40, unlike certain models made by DeLonghi, does NOT have a pump feature therefore it cannot make the flow of water go against gravity. As such, your drain will always have to be BELOW your dehumidifier in height, whereas with many DeLonghi models, your dehumidifier could be in the basement and your drainage could be above it on the ground floor level.

Now, on to the all important negative points raised by the CFM-40 dehumidifier reviews on Amazon and elsewhere. All involve broken units but in order to better aid readers, I have grouped these into three distinct classes:

If a unit is broken on arrival, it could well be that they are getting damaged in transit. If your Soleus Dehumidifier is not removing moisture from the air when you first turn it on, check your settings and if it really doesn’t work, call the vendor and send it back immediately. Do not delay, and you will get your money back with no problems. Reputed market places like amazon, even if you buy from a third party, have very strict rules in place to protect buyers. Now, if your unit is broken after 1-2 months of use, you should also send it back. Some ways to pre-empt this are, always be careful when moving the unit about, especially up and down stairs. Items such as dehumidifiers are surprisingly sensitive to shock and may be rendered dysfunctional if too much shock is absorbed from impacts. As long as you feel you have done nothing to render the Soleus Air Dehumidifier dysfunctional, then arrange to return the unit for your money back. If you return from 6 months to 1 year, make sure that it is less than 1 year because the warranty will expire once 12 months are up. 1 year isn’t so bad if you’re running a dehumidifier 24/7, but still, from top brands like Soleus Air, you should be expecting better than that. I find it baffling that so many customers are reporting perfect functionality after 2, 3, 4 years, while a few are complaining of receiving non-functional units, or units that stopped working after just a few weeks. Since I only trialled this for 1 week with perfect performance, I can only recommend that if you buy the Soleus Dehumidifier, or indeed any dehumidifier for that matter, you buy from a reputed seller with strong customer refund policies in place. Examples would be Amazon, Best Buy, and so on. That way, you are risking a lot less when you buy; because whichever 40 pint dehumidifier you do end up buying, there is always a chance of in transit damage, defective units and so on. It’s an unlikely, but definitely possible, part of the home appliance game.

Overall, I think that the Soleus Air CFM-40 is a case of massive potential but slight imperfection at the last hurdle, namely reliability. For example, if there were less reports of breakdowns or broken items on arrival, I would not hesitate to class this as the best dehumidifier in the small (40 pint) size range. However, as it stands, I cannot recommend this to my reviewers until Soleus has addressed the issues raised by this review.

In the meantime, I recommend that you check out all 696 customer made dehumidifier reviews for the Soleus Air Dehumidifier CFM-40 40 Pint on Amazon yourself!

50 Pint Dehumidifier With Pump DeLonghi DD50P

Written on December 12, 2011 at 2:55 am, by

50 Pint Dehumidifier With PumpThe DeLonghi DD50P 50 Pint Dehumidifier with Pump is the perfect addition to any home with overly humid conditions whether due to climate or due to external conditions, e.g. floods, basement moisture, etc. A combination of hands-off functionality with the patented pump for auto-emptying of accumulated water, and decreased energy consumption as a result of its Energy Star compliance. The DD50P, as a 50 pint dehumidifier, is in the mid-range in terms of home dehumidifier daily capacity, with 30 pints day and 70 pints per day being the lower and upper ends respectively. As such, it is not to be used for rooms of mansion-like proportions, however the DD50P dehumidifier with pump can definitely hold its own and remove the excessive moisture from the vast majority of homes.

The DeLonghi DD50P 50 Pint Dehumidifier with Pump has:

State of the art LCD screen plus digital controls
Programmable timer
R410A refrigerant and high energy efficiency for significant savings on bills
Humidistat to adjust the target level of humidity
Pump to automatically remove water without any manual labor

Customer rating: 4/5 stars (29 reviews)

Anyone who has purchased dehumidifiers in the past or read the many dehumidifier reviews online will know all too well that dehumidifiers are one of those sub-category of appliances that are prone to breakdowns; I personally experienced this with the first 4 dehumidifiers I purchased in my lifetime, and this was one of the reasons I started this website. The fact is, if you don’t learn from other people’s experiences, information widely available online but worth its weight in gold, then you are destined to repeat their mistakes. Thankfully, the DD50P is possibly the best dehumidifier available in terms of reliability and safety, as confirmed by dozens of happy reviewers, something which is surprisingly hard to achieve with dehumidifiers, mainly due to the fact that owners are more prone to post dehumidifier reviews if they have had a negative experience, so you can be sure that there are relatively few breakdowns with the DD50P Dehumidifier with Pump.

My testing of this unit went smoothly: I ran it for a week 24 hours a day for 1 week constantly, using the pretty nifty pump (quite a nice change from always having to take the water out). I experienced no problems however I must give a fair warning to all readers – the tests on this site are only for 1 week periods. It’s impossible for me or anyone to test over 10 dehumidifiers for years each, and that is, I believe, where the best dehumidifier will be found. And that, I must stress, is where you can and must use customer written dehumidifier reviews to your advantage. Many of these dehumidifier reviews are written by people who have owned these units for months or even years, which is a test of far greater scope than I or any other website could perform in a week.

The real strength of this 50 pint dehumidifier, and what makes it in my opinion the best dehumidifier in the 50 pint range is that it can keep going without what one witty customer refers to as the “bucket brigade”. All the water sucked out of the air by the DD50P unit will be pumped through the hose to your desired drain, even against the force of gravity, hence this particular model is ideal for waterlogged basements threatened by mould and bacteria. My advice would be to not only read this review, which is only a summary to get you started, but to read all the other dehumidifier reviews written by customers over the years. Their experiences paint a very convincing picture in favor of this DD50P 50 Pint Dehumidifier with Pump, however you should always make your own mind up. (If you disagree with the opinions printed on this site, then I would love to hear your views so do not hesitate to use the contact us page!)

Now, my favorite part. The negatives! I always like to nitpick for some reason, so here goes. Well, there aren’t any real ‘deal-breakers’ per se, but I did find a few imperfections. First of all, although the DD50P 50 Pint Dehumidifier with Pump is Energy Star compliant, which roughly means that it consumes around 20% less energy than federal requirements, its fan still seems to operate at full speed even when the unit has reached the desired humidity level. I’m sure they could make extra efficiency savings here to reduce costs further. Secondly, the DD50P will cause the room to heat up by a few degrees over a long period of operation. I’m sure that’s the case with most dehumidifiers being quite demanding pieces of equipment, but it seems that despite the fan and the refrigerant, there is still excess heat generated by the operation of the unit. Just a word of caution to those who want a dehumidifier because of hot and sticky climate conditions – you’ve probably already got this covered but just in case – an air conditioner is a must.

DeLonghi Dehumidifier DD45PDeLonghi is one of the leading manufacturers of home appliances in the world, and this particular DeLonghi dehumidifier, the DD45P, is one of the most popular medium-size home dehumidifiers made by DeLonghi. The ease of use combined with ease of maintenance makes this DeLonghi unit one of the best dehumidifiers for those looking for a ‘set and forget’ dehumidifying solution. However, users can still control the amount of interaction they have with the unit, with two options of water collection: via the novel patented pump and hose, or by simply emptying the internal tank as required. Periodical cleaning of any dehumidifier is necessary, but the DD45P makes this as easy as possible with just a simple rinse of the air filter required.

The DeLonghi DD45P 45-Pint Energy Star Dehumidifier has:

LCD display and electronic controls for easy access to key statistics
Automatic water emptying via active pump function
24 hour timer for ‘set and forget’ dehumidifying
Humidistat for custom setting of your perfect humidity level
Energy Star certification for impressive savings off your energy bills

This DeLonghi Dehumidifier, the DD45P, is the best dehumidifier in the 45 pint size largely due to one particular function that sets it far above its competitors, so much so that DeLonghi have patented it so that other companies cannot copy them. This is of course, the pump, which actively pumps water out of the dehumidifier and out through the hose. This automatic removal of water collected by the dehumidifier unit is the ideal feature for anyone who wants effortless removal of moisture from the air. As you can probably tell from many dehumidifier reviews, there is nothing more irritating than having to constantly empty buckets of water. Dehumidifiers are supposed to make life easier, not add to the daily chores. I personally could not agree more with one customer who states her disbelief as to how all dehumidifiers haven’t had automatic pumps up until this little DeLonghi dehumidifier.

The DD45P DeLonghi Dehumidifier appears to be quite popular among those who own houses which have been flooded, a number of DD45P dehumidifier reviews being from customers whose homes have unfortunately been flooded as a result of recent hurricanes, Irene for example. Such extreme levels of moisture would be the ultimate test of this unit’s abilities, or lack thereof. Sure, I have tested the unit thoroughly but not with any type of moisture that could compete with that left in the aftermath of severe flooding. It is, therefore, very pleasing to hear that the DD45P DeLonghi Dehumidifier can actually dry these rooms out in a reasonable amount of time. While the capacity may be 45 pints per day as opposed to larger dehumidifiers that can remove up to 70 pints per day, the patented pump which enables automatic drainage means that you can literally leave this DeLonghi Dehumidifier to run 24/7 without having to interact with it at all, except perhaps to rinse the filter every now and again. This automation is really the key for busy modern folks who really don’t have the time to be emptying buckets every day. Running any appliance 24/7 is a worry for many, but the DD45P DeLonghi Dehumidifier can handle it. I would only suggest giving it a rest maybe once a month. Moreover, reviews from customers who have owned this unit for long time periods indicate that it is not prone to break after a short time in use, as some lesser quality home appliances may do.

On to the negative points that customers have raised. Some owners have written that the DD45P DeLonghi Dehumidifier is quite loud, and while it is true that compared to a toaster, for example, the DD45P is loud, in terms of all the other dehumidifiers we have tested, it’s just average. The main issue that customers complain about is the timer feature, and the fact that if you want to change the times at which the unit switches on and off, you have to set it each day, rather than pre-set it all beforehand. I definitely agree with this – DeLonghi could have made a perfect product if they had just made these adjustments. However I maintain that the real strength of this dehumidifier is its ability to run 24/7 with no breaking and no need to empty it. In this case you don’t need to program anything.

Danby DDR7009REE

Danby DDR7009REEAlong with the Frigidaire FAD704DUD, the Danby DDR7009REE ranks head to head for the best dehumidifier crown, capable of removing up to 70 pints of moisture from the air per day. This unit is therefore ideal for larger homes, especially humid climates, damp basements and flooded rooms. Despite its large capacity, the DDR7009REE uses a surprisingly low amount of energy and is thus Energy Star compliant, leading to benefits for both the environment and your elecricity bill. Danby has also incorporated some more cutting edge features over and above those of older models, including an automatic shut off which ensures that your unit is only in use when it is required, and an innovative auto dry function which allows the unit to remain clean with no work on your part.

The Danby DDR7009REE 70 Pint Dehumidifier has:

Digital controls with LED display
Pre-programmed humidity levels for quick, easy dehumidifying
Remote control for access anywhere in the house
Maximum area 3800 square feet

The Danby DDR7009REE has been favored in recent years by those who are looking for the best dehumidifier alternative for a Frigidaire or DeLonghi unit. Many of the positive reviews touch upon the energy saving aspects of the DDR7009REE compared to older dehumidifiers of similar capacity. This can be attributed to advances in technology increasing efficiency as well as the increased focus on energy efficiency as a goal in and of itself, due to the increasing environmental awareness that we have today. It is hard for me to comment on the long term functionality of this unit as I have only been able to test it for a week, however there are dozens of customers on both amazon and consumer reports who are impressed with the auto dry function of the DDR7009REE, since many of their previous best dehumidifiers have succumbed to the effects of excess moisture within the unit: bacteria growths, mould and rust being the main culprits. The auto dry function greatly mitigates these often detrimental problems. A very clever idea from Danby.

In terms of the raw moisture eliminating power of the Danby DDR7009REE, my opinion is that it is slightly superior to its Frigidaire counterpart, however the difference is negligible when you consider that both dehumidifiers will detect a certain pre-programmed level of humidity and switch off when that level is reached. This means that the only real issue to compare is the time it takes the unit to remove moisture from the air. Whichever unit you choose, the same effect will be reached, but units that take longer will generally use more power and cost you more in the long run, though, to be honest, if the unit is Energy Star compliant, the difference on your electricity bill would probably be measured in cents, not dollars. Overall, the Danby DDR7009REE is up there with the very best dehumidifiers from the bigger brands, and some users actually go as far as to say that this unit is the best they have ever owned. Unfortunately these reviewers have had to learn the hard way – many dehumidifiers, a lot of money and decades of trial and error. (This is one reason I made this site, if only to recommend only the very best dehumidifier like the DDR7009REE and to ignore the duds. Remember, if I haven’t reviewed a dehumidifier it is probably because it didn’t meet the quality standards I set so that you can avoid bad purchases, but if you feel that I’ve missed one, then please contact me and I will get on it straight away.)

Of course, as with the vast majority of high ticket appliances, there are bound to be some functionality problems in a few cases. Nonetheless, in the case of dehumidifiers in general, I am quite bewildered that we can read hundreds of absolutely stellar dehumidifier reviews singing praises from the rooftops, yet at the same time we find that a few customers have awful experiences. To me, it just doesn’t make sense. Digging deeper into the bad dehumidifier reviews, I see breaks caused by a surge in current just after a power outage – not necessarily the manufacturer’s fault, but there could be some sort of warning in the manual or internal protection against this, given that power outages are pretty common. Aside from this, I can only guess that problems are caused either during shipping or during moving the dehumidifier to a new area of the house, particularly down steep steps as is often the case with basements. And one last issue that you might wish to note, the DDR7009REE is quite loud. I wouldn’t put it in my bedroom while I’m trying to get to sleep, put it that way. It’s not extremely loud, but definitely not quiet either.

As of Fall 2011, the Danby DDR7009REE is still available at selected retailers, however it has been discontinued by the manufacturer which means that additional parts will most likely not be possible, even if you have purchased with a warranty. As such, proceed with caution. If you are still set on the Danby DDR7009REE, or wish to read all 60 reviews in full, please see the link at the bottom of this page, otherwise see our dehumidifier review for another 70 pint capacity unit, the Frigidaire FAD704DUD.

Frigidaire Dehumidifier 70 Pint FAD704DUD

Frigidaire Dehumidifier 70 Pint FAD704DUDThe Frigidaire Dehumidifier FAD704DUD is arguably the best dehumidifier currently on the market in the 70 pint class, boasting uninterrupted use capability all the while maintaining stringent energy efficiency standards, as proven by its Energy Star certification. Appliances which are Energy Star certified use considerably less energy than required by government authorities – somewhere in the region of twenty to thirty per cent – and this means that the FAD704DUD not only helps the environment, but it also leads to significant savings in electricity bills. While some older dehumidifier reviews indicate problems with continuous use, Frigidaire sets the standard with constant operation day and night being absolutely no problem. Please note that although we have tested the Frigidaire Dehumidifier FAD704DUD continuously over an entire week with no issues or decline in performance whatsoever, as with any appliance it is recommended to give it a rest every now and again and be reasonable with your expectations.

The Frigidaire Dehumidifier FAD704DUD has:

A massive 70 pint per day dehumidifying capacity
Uninterrupted use capability provided there is a nearby drain
Full, modern, easy electronic control interface
Double fan speeds

Customer opinion: 4/5 stars (205 ratings)

The vast majority of customers have had positive experiences with the FAD704DUD, and the very large total of Frigidaire FAD704DUD Dehumidifier reviews available on amazon is a good indication as to the FAD704DUD’s popularity and hence, quality. Some users are putting the Frigidaire Dehumidifier FAD704DUD in their basements in order to clear the moisture which often accumulates in dark, cooler areas, while other customers are using this unit in order to decrease discomfort due to humid air in particularly hot places. For both functions, the Frigidaire 70 Pint Dehumidifier FAD704DUD works well, the best dehumidifier I have seen for these indications at 70 pints, but please note that if you want to use this unit constantly, you will need access to a drain because this huge 70 pint per day dehumidifying capacity means that you will be removing a LOT of water from the air. Some reviewers are also using the Frigidaire Dehumidifier FAD704DUD for removing moisture from their homes after flooding, and in this case in particular, this unit is the best choice because of its ability to run constantly as well as its very large 70 pint per day capacity.

We also checked ratings on Consumer Reports, the other main source of unbiased customer dehumidifier reviews beside amazon, and the Frigidaire 70 Pint Dehumidifier FAD704DUD has received stellar reviews there. The FAD704DUD Dehumidifier ratings elsewhere were generally very positive as they have been on amazon, and in our testing. When all three indicators are positive, this is a very reliable sign of quality. Another aspect of purchasing any new appliance which is very important, is ease of set up. Thankfully, the Frigidaire 70 Pint Dehumidifier FAD704DUD poses no problems on this front, either. In terms of price, some customers say that they shopped around before purchasing on amazon, and in general, you will find that the Frigidaire FAD704DUD is around $300-320, versus around $200-220 on amazon.

Even if we see 1000 positive dehumidifier reviews and just 1 negative, prudent buyers will still have to explore this before parting with their hard earned money. One of these Frigidaire FAD704DUD Dehumidifier reviews that caught our attention was about the cooling system leaking cooling fluid, and hence freezing the surrounding components. There is a one year warranty on the overall product but a five year on the cooling system, therefore the customer should have had no problems in repair and/or replacement of the faulty parts. However, this five year warranty appears to be limited. There are a number of reasons cooling fluid could leak, and due to the strict process large, well respected brands like Frigidaire have in place, it’s more likely a small trauma in transit which enlarged with extended use, or trauma during movement by the owner. However, when your money is at stake, it isn’t always that easy. Dehumidifiers, even the best quality models, from whatever brand you buy, your appliance should always be covered by a full warranty for at least 3 years, in order to get good value for money. Unfortunately, manufacturers do not fully cover the products they make as there are so many variables which can cause malfunction. Our recommendation is to purchase a separate SquareTrade Appliances Warranty – it costs 40 bucks more, but it will cover you against pretty much anything you come up against. Even the very best dehumidifier can fail due to overuse and it is therefore prudent to have full protection.

Here I’ve tried my best to summarize the Frigidaire Dehumidifier FAD704DUD as best I can based on our own tests and many customer reviews, however we recommend that you also read reviews first hand. Click here to read all 205 customer reviews on Amazon.
